Unbeaten Paths - Editorial June 2004

Dear Sisters,

It's been a wet and rainy spring! We three editors wish you some warm and sunny summer days ahead, with a little time to sit and read and think. We are sending you this issue of Unbeaten Paths as a contribution to your summer reading, but we also have other reading to suggest. Please have a look at the Spring 2004 issue of Herizons. On page 21 you'll find an article about feminist publishing houses and the Canadian publishing industry. Several interesting and current feminist books are mentioned in it. (We want to read them all!) This issue of Herizons also contains an interview with Margaret Atwood about reading in general, and about her futuristic feminist novel Oryx and Crake. That's another one for your list!

And on the back of this editorial you'll find a copy of the Resources page from WATERwheel (Women's Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual). It lists 18 books published in the United States, the United Kingdom and Chile since 2002, all having to do with feminism and theology. All but one (Same Sex Marriage: A Christian Ethical Analysis by Marvin M. Ellison) are by women. Some are by new authors, but there are also new books by old friends, like Carol Christ and Rosemary Radford Ruether on the list. The prices are in U.S. dollars. If your congregation allots money for the purchase of books, then any of these books would make an interesting addition to a church's library!

Speaking of old friends, please note that this issue contains a special section on Reproductive Rights. We always think of our former Unbeaten Paths editor Florence Bishop when we come across articles on this theme. Reproductive rights, reproductive technologies, and the many issues that surround them have been very important to Florence (and to many others) over the years, and it is clear from the articles we reprint here that the issues haven't yet been resolved. We need to continue to stay informed, keep watch, think ethically and do what we can to protect women's interests.

In closing, we want to thank Catherine Barnesley for sending us the article "Boutique Law" which appears in the Close to Home section of this issue. We invite all our readers to consider sending us interesting articles for Unbeaten Paths , as you come across them in your own reading. Or write to us! We'd love to hear about your life and the issues that touch you.

Wishing you the best this summer,

Brenda, Jayne and Meredith
